K-9 Loft is a beautiful store. From the chocolate brown façade with hip white signage, to the sweeping wood floors and impeccable lighting, this store is the crème de la crème of pet stores. You’ll want to bring a sac full of quarters for the metered parking out front, as it’s very tough to just pop by. Within each corner of the store, which is not cluttered at all, you’ll discover cool, stylish and well designed dog paraphernalia. With an urban, yuppie feel, K-9 loft is situated in a very cool part of town, so what might sound pretentious for a pet store is actually not at all. The staff is super friendly and down to earth, and their mission is to offer dog owners a “new, higher level of care for their precious companions”. They put health and safety first, and require all employees to be certified pet care technicians through the ABKA. In addition to doggy day care, grooming and training, K-9 Loft offers some unique services as well. Stop in with your new rescue for DNA Testing to see what breed your special hound might be. But, fret not, if a busy work schedule doesn’t allow, this snazzy shop also has a Shuttle Service to get your baby to and from appointments! Tawnie’s Pet Depot, although boutique in size and location, is actually part of a franchise of pet stores called Pet Depot. There are about five locations in Los Angeles total, each with their own feel. Kirby’s Pet Depot in West La is probably the largest and most well-known. They even sell small pets like hamsters and birds, but with that comes that more traditional pet “supply” store feel. All very clean and abundantly stocked, what these stores may be lacking in style, they make up for it in form and function. Products are more practical, like a complete wall dedicated to standard leashes and training collars, as well as a wide variety of great foods including all 8 flavors of canned Natural Balance food http://naturalbalance.net/dogformulas/canned.html
There are also cute things like dog clothes (although they feel more mass-produced for pocket sized dogs) and there is a selection of gourmet bones and chews (but again those seemed to have been plucked from a larger bin and packaged as separate). The predominate feel here is “essentials”, but with that come reasonable prices. And, we like that! Tawnie’s Pet Depot is the best out of the bunch because it’s located near a fantastic dog park in Playa Vista. I suggest making a trip out of it with your four legged baby. Head to the dog park adjacent to the Playa Vista shopping center, and after your dog’s had enough romping and rolling, stop by Tawnie’s to stock up on Natural Balance Tillman’s Training Tips www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/trainingtips.html#Beef - your dog will go nuts, and, if YOU need a treat grab a coffee at the Coffee Bean next door. 4 licks.

From first glance I wasn’t sure what this store would be like. Located in your basic strip mall in Hollywood, it didn’t scream deluxe. But, when Lyle and I walked in we could not believe our eyes. Clean and well organized with high ceilings and lots of light, this large boutique carries everything you could possibly imagine – beds, toys, agility tools, collars, leashes, clothes, accessories, pet inspired art, doggy presents, grooming supplies, and every kind of cool (even if unnecessary) product your pup may need ranging from organics to ROGYBIV plastics. The food and treat selection was plenty making this hip dog store practical and well as fun. With the full line of Natural Balance to choose from, including the new Sweet Potato & Bison formula – great for dogs with flaxseed allergies – there is really no need to shop the super stores any more. They even have a doggy day spa outpost right next door – Tailwashers. Better yet, there is a cute strip of amazing restaurants right around the corner on Franklin. So make a day out of it and drop your dirty pooch off for a wash, go have an amazing lunch at Birds Café, then spoil your fresh baby with some doggy ice cream found in the freezer section!
